On a cold early morning in East London, the VeganHub community gathered for the “East London Chicken Save” vigil, an event that poignantly intertwined feelings of joy and sorrow. Activists from various walks of life reunited with a shared purpose: to bear witness to the thousands of chickens facing their final moments before slaughter. This vigil was more than just a protest; it was a solemn act of empathy and a call to action for a more compassionate world.

The vigil began with a sense of camaraderie, as familiar faces reconnected and new friendships were forged. The atmosphere was filled with hope and determination, reminding us that we are not alone in our fight for animal rights. We shared stories, laughed, and drew strength from each other, knowing that our collective effort is essential in bringing about change.

The Mood Shifted Like A Wind Blew Over Us

As the trucks began to arrive, the mood shifted to a sombre tone. The reality of the situation became painfully clear as we witnessed the chickens, crammed into cages, their bodies showing the signs of their short and brutal lives. Grown to adult size in less than two months, these animals were exhausted and broken, their little bodies unable to cope with the unnatural growth rate forced upon them. The stench of fear and filth was overwhelming, a stark reminder of the suffering these sentient beings endure.

We stood in silence for one minute, a gesture of respect and mourning for the lives about to be lost. During this moment, many of us felt a deep connection with the chickens, recognizing their plight and the injustice they face. It was a powerful reminder of why we continue to fight for a world where animals are treated with the dignity and compassion they deserve.

The event concluded with a renewed sense of purpose. As we said our goodbyes and returned to our daily lives, the images of the chickens stayed with us, fuelling our determination to advocate for change. We left with heavy hearts, but also with a profound sense of unity and resolve.
